Can anyone please let me know why people cannot post to my forums unless they are registered?

All the permissions are set properly for public.

...but not the solution. In a thread below someone is happy about less spam coming in, and the supporter answers that he has changed something so only registered users can post - or something like that.

I am "enjoying" exactly the same problems as you are, and I am not very happy with the changes. Actually this might kill my forum because a lot of people look at my forum but very few want to post when they have to register first. I don't know what to do. 2 months ago I went from another forum to this one because it was possible for nonregistered users to post. And now the possibility is gone again. I'm a bit frustrated, to say the least.

To the supporter: Is there any way to switch this on and off individually?It would be very nice.

I think it is a benefit to be able to have anonymous postings. If every user has to go through the process of registering I think there will be alot less interest.

i know very well what you are say, but before 60-70% of forums or more was created only but only for spam, so after i do that, maybe 5% are used for spam and the spam posts are reduced very very very much and are allmost inexistent. Most users are happy doing this. Spam was an ugly problem, a problem that i solved, many big forums hosting services still have this spam problems.

We will try to upgrate our forums to PHPbb3 in the future, and ther will be a little better to fight against spam. Now we are looking to a nice solution to convert all forums. Still are some small problems.
