|
|
I was wondering whether there is a way for me to stop any new registrations on my forum. I am continuiosly deleting members who post porn etc and keep spamming therefore I would like to stop new members from signing up. Also, if this is possible, is there a way that I can make new memberships for those I can trust?
Thanks,
Jess |

Hi !
You can Ban all members(bots or what they are) that post porn,...etc,by username or by IP if the same user will register again with other nickname. In this matter you can setup an account activation ony by Admin (you) and you can solve a problem. What user you like or not you can activate his account or not
I hope that the problem it is solved.

Making the board private will not solve the problem. Set-up to post only members, not Guests and when you see a bad post, delete , and ban the user (and IP if he will register again with other nickname and same IP), this is the only solution that will diminuate spam _________________ Setup your FREE FORUM now !

I'll add a post to this thread encouraging the owners to allow administrators to disallow websites in registrant profiles much like we can disallow avatars. And to have a new member interface in the administration panel for the purpose of quick deletion. I haven't had repeat unwanted registrants yet.
Thank you for your consideration. |

I have created a tool (invisible for admins) that eliminate 80-90% of the spam.
Now you have User List in Admin Panel when you can see all users and sort, view,...delete them if you want, very easy! You can see spammers that they do not activate accounts so you can delete all by few clicks ! Be careful to not delete yourself.
And i was asked how to stop new registration. Simple put the character * on the Disallow names in your Admin panel and nobody can register on your forum ! I do not recomand this because maybe you lose important new members !
Enjoy of less spam on forums ! _________________ Setup your FREE FORUM now !

I've Been away for a couple of months, hope your exams went well.
Thanks for putting that User List interface together! Good job! Way to go!
I began banning email domains under Ban Control because I had a bunch of registrants from *@mail.ru and *@allfarm.cn in hopes of discouraging these guys. Of course I don't know if this really does anything other than make the spammer list a new domain. So does that really do anything?
Also, how do you re-allow a domain if you make a mistake in banning one? |

you can try to ban *@*.cn and *@mail.ru that are most big spammers. Anyway you will not reduce too much the registers.
My antispam tool work fine, but it is bypassed by some users (they use direct writing into database i think)
If you want to unban an domain, make a click on that domain and then click Submit and that will be deleted from list
Good luck _________________ Setup your FREE FORUM now !

I was doing it from the banning email box, and I didn't see where to unban there, or in the banning hostnames box.
does banning from the userlist interface delete the registrant also?
maybe you could sticky a post about Strategies to Prevent Unwanted Registrants, then you can edit it as strategies change.
your poll question is tough to answer because I just began banning email domains a couple days ago, so I don't know which factor will be more integral.
Again, thank you for the interface to quickly delete unwanted registrants.

No, banning only ban the person to login and do not delete anything. You can use delete option to delete that person if you want. _________________ Setup your FREE FORUM now !

Ok, I think I understand. Banning only bans the person to login but does not delete the registrant.
BTW, About the ban control interface, I've been a little confused by the interface but finally realized your structure: Users, IP's or Hostnames, Emails; ban in the first part, unban in the second.
If I ban a hostname is that the same as banning their website? and if so how do I type in a hostname? (i.e. greatfarm.cn)? or www.greatfarm.cn?
And the ban control interface, would you be willing to setup the interface to allow sorting by name? Much like the User and Membership list. |

The number of unwanted registrants is at about 5 a day for my site, not many, but I don't want any.
I've banned by email, but some of the registrants are using commonly used email domains *@hotmail.com or *@gmail.com which I don't want to ban.
I probably should of banned in this manner *@netmail* leaving off the .com, .org .ru. Though, I believe the spammers are making up the email address anyways. Which gets me back to lobbying to remove a carrot that drives them here: posting and registering their website.
I'd like to attack this on two levels: disallow registrants from showing their website, and if their bot adds a website in the registration process then return an error message to them, in effect hopefully stopping their bot.
I tried banning web domains in hopes of banning their websites in this manner *bestfarm*, because they change the url in the website slightly at the end, but that didn't work. Any suggestions?
Again can you do a sticky on stopping unwanted registrants and spammers? |
